Date 8 - 12 February 2010, Deltares, Delft, the Netherlands (rescheduled to 6 - 10 September 2010)
Course leaders Frans Barends, Deltares Tomas Bles, Deltares
Course background In poorly defined situations the incorporation of the available expertise (soft data) and proper management of incomplete data (e.g. soil material) improves physical and numerical approaches (hard data). Therefore Deltares developed the GeoBrain concept: "Integrating expertise, experience and machine learning to improve prediction models in design and decision models."
Aim of the course During the five-day workshop we aim to familiarize participants with the possibilities of GeoBrain, for applications in their own research and consultancy areas. The whole week covers both general topics, such as risk thinking, economic value and people (experts), and more specific topics, such as bayesian belief networks, genetic algorithms and other machine learning (artificial intelligence) aspects. Developing a case definition for practical applications will be part of the workshop.
Description Coaches introduce their topic and guide the participants in a discussion. Participants actively apply their newly obtained knowledge to a simple problem. This provides for a practical acquaintance with all possibilities and pitfalls of the GeoBrain components
After one week the participants have
- ideas how to make use of expertise, experience and predictions for decision making and control
- hands-on experience with all current components that add up to the GeoBrain concept
- a bird-eye-view on machine learning (AI) techniques
- the knowledge to make decisions what techniques to use and where to start, considering a new application.
